A daily-driven sedan, a track car, an overland 4x4 and a show build place very different loads on a wheel, so the target use case drives the engineering choices that follow: load rating, barrel depth, spoke layout and finish.

Diameter and Width: the Foundation of Fitment

Diameter and width define the tire envelope and the visual stance. Forged construction allows a wide size range in 1-inch increments, and widths are tuned in half-inch steps to match the chosen tire. For staggered setups, front and rear sizes are engineered as a matched pair so the rolling diameter stays correct.

  • Diameter: chosen around the vehicle platform and brake package; common project ranges run from 17 to 24 inch, with other sizes subject to project confirmation.
  • Width: matched to tire section width and fender clearance; concave designs may limit maximum width.
  • Tire clearance: allow margin for sidewall stretch, camber and suspension travel.

PCD (Bolt Pattern): Get the Bolt Circle Right

The PCD, or bolt pattern, is the diameter of the circle running through the wheel bolts, for example 5x112 or 5x120. It must match the hub exactly; there is no safe compromise on this number. Dual-drill patterns are possible on some forged designs, but they change pad geometry and must be reviewed case by case.

Offset / ET: Controlling Stance and Clearance

Offset (ET) is the distance between the wheel mounting face and the centerline of the rim. It decides how far the wheel sits in or out of the fender, and it directly affects suspension geometry, bearing load and inner clearance.

Brake Caliper Clearance: Measure Before You Order

Large brake kits are the most common reason a beautiful wheel design fails to fit. Caliper clearance has three dimensions: radial (caliper outer radius against the inner spoke profile), axial (caliper thickness against the barrel and spoke drop) and the bolt-head zone around the hub.

The reliable method is a clearance template or 3D scan of the brake package. Concavity and Spoke Design: Balancing Looks and Strength

Deep concave faces are the signature of premium forged wheels, but concavity is not a free choice: it competes with brake clearance, offset and load rating. A deeper face usually means a higher spoke drop, which the forging and CNC process must be designed around from the start.

6061-T6 Forged Aluminum: Why the Material Matters
